Abuja, Nigeria — July 7, 2025
In a shocking development that has sent ripples across Nigeria’s political landscape, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a high-ranking Nigerian politician over allegations of diverting ₦20 billion in public funds.
According to an official statement released by the EFCC this morning, the unnamed politician — a former minister and current national party chieftain — was apprehended late Sunday night in Abuja following months of surveillance, forensic investigation, and tracking of suspicious financial transactions.
“The suspect is being investigated for criminal conspiracy, abuse of office, diversion of public funds, and money laundering amounting to over ₦20 billion, siphoned through phantom contracts and foreign accounts,” the EFCC stated.
💼 Funds Linked to Infrastructure Projects
Preliminary findings reveal that the stolen funds were originally budgeted for rural road construction and power electrification projects in Northern Nigeria, many of which were either abandoned or never commenced.
Sources close to the investigation disclosed that the EFCC tracked multiple payments made to shell companies allegedly owned by close relatives and associates of the politician.
🔍 Social Media Reacts
The news has sparked a storm on social media platforms, with Nigerians expressing outrage and demanding the public exposure and prosecution of all those involved.
“₦20 billion can fix over 100 rural schools. This is wickedness,” one X (formerly Twitter) user wrote.
“Until they start naming and jailing these thieves, this nonsense will never stop,” said another.
🛡️ EFCC Promises Transparency
EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, has vowed that the case will be pursued “without fear or favour” and that the Commission is committed to restoring public trust.
“No one is above the law. This arrest is just the beginning. We will follow the money, recover stolen assets, and prosecute everyone found culpable.”
🧾 What’s Next?
The suspect is currently in EFCC custody and is expected to be arraigned before the Federal High Court later this week.
If convicted, the politician could face up to 25 years in prison, asset forfeiture, and a lifetime ban from holding public office.
