The Coordinator of the 2025 Ojude Oba Festival, Dr. Fassy Adetokunboh Yusuf, has officially addressed public concerns over the absence of the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, from this year’s celebration in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

According to Dr. Yusuf, the revered monarch, who turned 91 this year, was recently discharged from a Lagos hospital and is currently recuperating. “The Awujale is in stable condition and is resting as advised by his doctors,” Yusuf said. “There is absolutely no cause for alarm.”

The statement came amid speculation following the monarch’s noticeable absence at the annual cultural and tourism event, which traditionally sees him receive homage from various age-grade groups (regberegbe), dignitaries, and well-wishers.

In his stead, the Awujale was represented by his wife, Olori Kemi Adetona, who received guests on his behalf. The festival proceeded with its usual grandeur, featuring colorful parades, equestrian displays, and cultural performances that celebrated the rich heritage of the Ijebu people.

Dr. Yusuf emphasized that the monarch’s health was the top priority and that his decision to rest during the festivities was made out of wisdom and necessity, not emergency. “Kabiyesi is fine. His spirit was with us during the celebration. We only ask that people continue to pray for his strength and long life,” he added.

The 2025 Ojude Oba Festival drew thousands of participants from across Nigeria and the diaspora, reaffirming its place as one of the most iconic cultural events in the country.
