Abuja, Nigeria – July 14, 2025

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday to honour the memory of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away at the age of 82.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Interior late Monday evening, the government described the day as a “National Day of Mourning and Respect” for the late statesman, who served as both a military head of state and a democratically elected president.

“President Muhammadu Buhari dedicated his life to the service of our nation. His contributions to national development, anti-corruption efforts, and regional peace remain deeply impactful. The Federal Government deems it fitting to declare Tuesday, July 15, as a public holiday in his honour,” the statement read.

Flags will be flown at half-mast across the country, and all government offices, public institutions, and schools will remain closed. Nigerians are encouraged to use the day to reflect on President Buhari’s legacy and contributions to the nation’s progress.

A national memorial service is also scheduled to take place in Abuja, with dignitaries, world leaders, and citizens expected to attend.

President Buhari, who ruled Nigeria as a military leader from 1983 to 1985 and later served two terms as a civilian president from 2015 to 2023, was known for his strict anti-corruption stance, commitment to national security, and efforts to reposition Nigeria on the global stage.

May his soul rest in perfect peace. 🕊️🇳🇬
