Five individuals have been arrested in connection with two nights of serious disorder in Ballymena, County Antrim. The violence, which erupted on Monday evening, was initially sparked by a vigil held in support of a teenage girl who was allegedly attacked by two 14-year-old boys.
What began as a peaceful gathering quickly escalated when a separate group broke away and engaged in violent behavior. Petrol bombs, fireworks, bricks, and other projectiles were thrown at police and properties, with homes belonging to minority and migrant families particularly targeted. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) described the violence as racially motivated.

A second night of unrest followed on Tuesday, involving hundreds of individuals. Officers from the PSNI were forced to deploy water cannons and less-lethal baton rounds in an attempt to restore order. Over the course of the disturbances, fifteen officers sustained injuries, six homes were damaged—four of which caught fire—and two vehicles were destroyed.

Among those arrested was a 29-year-old man who has been charged with riotous behaviour, disorderly conduct, attempted criminal damage, and resisting police. He is due to appear at Ballymena Magistrates’ Court on July 3. Four other individuals remain in custody under suspicion of riotous behaviour and are being questioned by authorities.
PSNI officials confirmed that an extensive investigation is underway, with CCTV and mobile phone footage being reviewed to identify additional suspects. Assistance from other UK police forces has been requested in anticipation of potential further unrest.
PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson stated that every effort is being made to bring all those responsible to justice and encouraged community members to assist in the investigation. Chief Constable Jon Boutcher condemned the violence as “mindless” and emphasized that attacks on vulnerable communities would not be tolerated.

The incidents have caused significant distress within the local community, with several migrant families reportedly fleeing the area due to fear. Police patrols in Ballymena have been increased to maintain calm and prevent further escalation.
Further updates are expected as investigations continue.
