Liverpool have confirmed that striker Alexander Isak has undergone surgery after suffering a fracture to his left leg.

According to BBC Sport on Tuesday, the club revealed that the Sweden international “successfully underwent surgery” on an ankle injury which included a fractured fibula. While no exact return date has been given, Liverpool expect the 26-year-old to be ruled out for several months.

Isak sustained the injury during Saturday’s clash against Tottenham, where he came off the bench and found the net for Arne Slot’s side. The forward was injured in a challenge from Micky van de Ven moments after scoring and was unable to continue the game.

He was clearly in discomfort and had to be assisted off the pitch by Liverpool’s medical staff.

The setback represents a major blow for both Liverpool and the striker, who joined the Reds in the summer for a Premier League record fee of £125 million. Since his arrival from Newcastle in September, Isak has registered three goals in 16 appearances across all competitions.

The injury adds to a challenging period for the forward. Over the summer, he missed Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia due to what was described as a minor thigh problem amid uncertainty surrounding his future. He later trained alone at former club Real Sociedad before sealing his deadline-day move to Anfield.
