President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has greenlit the appointment of 36 individuals to the governing councils of federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across Nigeria — a major move aimed at boosting governance in the nation’s tertiary institutions.

The announcement was made in Abuja by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who noted that the appointments take immediate effect.

According to Onanuga, the newly appointed council members were selected from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, ensuring a broad and inclusive national representation. The move aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes institutional reform and improved standards in the education sector.

“This is part of the Tinubu administration’s commitment to reposition tertiary education as a key driver of national development,” Onanuga stated.

Tinubu Sends NDIC Nominees to Senate for Approval

In a separate development, President Tinubu is seeking the Senate’s confirmation for two key appointments at the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) — a financial safety net agency.

  • Dr. Thompson Oludare Sunday has been nominated for Managing Director
  • Dr. Kabir Sabo Katata is up for Executive Director

The nominations were conveyed in a formal letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who read it during Tuesday’s plenary.

“In accordance with the provisions of Part II, Section 7(4) of the NDIC Act, 2023, I am pleased to present… the appointment of the following two nominees,” Tinubu said in the letter.

The Senate has referred the nominations to its Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, with instructions to complete its review within one week.

Both sets of appointments — in education and finance — come at a time when there is increasing demand for reform and performance across Nigeria’s public institutions. The Tinubu administration appears focused on reshaping key agencies and sectors as part of its wider governance strategy.
