Abidjan, May 22, 2025 – Tensions flared across Ivory Coast on Wednesday amid unverified reports of a possible coup and the alleged disappearance of President Alassane Ouattara. However, the Ivorian leader has since appeared publicly, chairing a cabinet meeting in Abidjan, effectively dispelling rumours of a government overthrow.

The unrest began earlier in the week, with gunfire reported in parts of the commercial capital and at least 33 people allegedly killed during clashes between protesters and security forces. The violence has been linked to growing public frustration with President Ouattara’s administration over alleged human rights abuses, economic hardship, and perceived overdependence on foreign powers—especially France and the U.S.

Social media amplified fears of a coup, with claims that Ouattara was either missing, arrested, or dead. However, local and international journalists have confirmed that many of the viral videos and posts were misleading or entirely false.

In a clear show of authority, President Ouattara presided over a high-level cabinet meeting on Thursday, May 22, countering the narrative of his absence and reaffirming government control.

Despite his appearance, internet access remains patchy in several parts of the country, and embassies have issued safety advisories, urging foreign nationals to remain indoors until stability is fully restored.

Ivory Coast has a history of political turbulence, including a 1999 military coup and two civil wars in the 2000s. However, officials insist the current unrest does not reflect a collapse of government or military control.

As the situation gradually stabilizes, authorities are calling for calm while promising a thorough investigation into the causes of the recent violence.
