Abuja, Nigeria – Senator David Umahi, Minister of Works, has announced that tolling will commence on Section 1 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway by December 2025. The minister made the disclosure during an interview for an upcoming State House documentary commemorating the second anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

According to Umahi, the highway is more than just a transportation project.

“By December, we will toll Section 1 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. We project a 10-year return on investment,” he stated.

The minister emphasized that the road is equipped with solar-powered lighting, CCTV surveillance, and carbon credit incentives, branding it an economic corridor designed to spur regional development.

🚧 Construction Progress:

  • 30km of Section 1 has already been completed.
  • An additional 10km in Section 2 is close to completion.
  • Both sections are constructed as six-lane, concrete-paved highways, designed to modern safety and durability standards.

Umahi also revealed that work has begun on Sections 3 and 3B, which span a combined 65 kilometres:

  • 38km in Cross River State
  • 27km in Akwa Ibom State

He noted the enthusiastic support from host communities, citing the projects’ socioeconomic impact.

“Just days ago, we flagged off Sections 3 and 3B. The host communities’ excitement speaks to these projects’ transformative impact,” he added.

🛣️ Focus on National Infrastructure:

The minister further highlighted renewed focus on the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, which he said is part of a broader national vision.

“The Trans-Saharan trade route dates back to colonial-era planning. President Tinubu is now bringing these long-abandoned visions to life,” Umahi said.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is seen as a flagship infrastructure initiative under the Tinubu administration, expected to boost trade, connectivity, and economic growth across southern Nigeria and beyond.
