At Least Seven Killed in Overnight Russian Strike on Kyiv Region
At least seven people were killed and several others injured in a Russian missile and drone assault on the Kyiv region overnight, according to Ukraine’s Interior Minister, Ihor Klymenko.
In a statement posted on social media, Klymenko said the attack struck residential areas, hospitals, and sports facilities. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that six of the fatalities occurred in a high-rise apartment building in the capital, where 22 others were also wounded.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to visit London on Monday for discussions with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer regarding continued military aid.
The Ukrainian air force reported that the latest wave of attacks involved 352 drones and 16 missiles, primarily targeting the Kyiv region. Russia has escalated its aerial bombardments in recent weeks, launching massive salvos of missiles, drones, and decoys aimed at overwhelming Ukraine’s air defense systems—a strategy Ukrainian forces are finding increasingly difficult to counter.
Thousands of Kyiv residents were forced to take shelter in the early hours of Monday as explosions rocked the city. Ukraine’s emergency services released video footage of residents being evacuated from a burning, destroyed high-rise.
Outside the capital, one death was reported in Bila Tserkva, south of Kyiv, where a drone hit a hospital.
Speaking to journalists in Kyiv, Ukraine’s commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrsky vowed a more aggressive military response. “We won’t remain passive in defense,” he said. “That only leads to losses—of people and territory.”
The strike comes just days after a separate Russian bombardment on Tuesday killed at least 28 people and injured more than 100 in Kyiv, marking one of the deadliest attacks on the city since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Diplomatic efforts to end the war have largely stalled. The most recent negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow—nearly three weeks ago—resulted only in limited agreements on prisoner exchanges and the repatriation of bodies. No further talks are currently scheduled.
President Zelensky was expected to meet U.S. President Donald Trump during last week’s G7 summit, but the meeting was canceled after Trump left early due to escalating tensions in the Middle East. While both leaders are due to attend the upcoming NATO summit, it is unclear whether they will hold bilateral talks.
