National Grid Suffers Fresh Collapse, AEDC Confirms
The national electricity grid suffered another collapse on Wednesday, plunging parts of the country into darkness.
In a public notice dated September 10, 2025, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the incident via a post on its X handle.
According to the company, the outage followed a loss of supply from the grid at 11:23 a.m., disrupting electricity across its franchise areas.
The notice read:
“Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 a.m. today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas.”
AEDC assured customers that efforts were underway to restore supply, stating:
“Rest assured, we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilised. Thank you for your patience and understanding. For further updates or inquiries, call: 08039070070. WhatsApp: 08152141414, 08152151515.”
Recurring Issue
Nigeria’s national grid has faced frequent collapses over the years. In 2024 alone, the system went down 12 times, and more than 100 times over the past decade.
Earlier in February, a similar collapse left millions without power.
In response to the persistent blackouts, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in April granted approval to six companies and one private university to generate and distribute electricity.
However, in its July report, NERC claimed that no system disturbances were recorded in the first quarter of 2025.
“There was no incidence of system disturbance on the national grid in 2025/Q1,” the report stated.
