Anthony Joshua Weighs Possible Retirement After Deadly Nigeria Car Crash — Uncle

Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is reportedly considering stepping away from professional boxing following a tragic car accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two close friends and key members of his boxing team, according to a family source.

Joshua’s uncle, Adedamola Joshua, disclosed that the 36-year-old boxer privately communicated his intentions to the family after the fatal crash, describing it as a deeply emotional turning point in his life.

“The most important thing now is that he has decided to step away from boxing, and that gives us some relief,” his uncle said. “Each time he steps into the ring, the emotional strain on the family is overwhelming. Seeing him go down feels like losing our breath. If he chooses to bow out while still respected, we are thankful.”

He confirmed that Joshua personally informed the family of his decision and has committed to supporting the families of the two victims, Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele, for life. Joshua broke his public silence on Sunday by posting photos with the bereaved families on Instagram, accompanied by the caption “My Brother’s Keeper,” signaling his continued solidarity and support.

The fatal accident occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as the group travelled in a Lexus SUV, which reportedly collided with a stationary truck. Ghami and Ayodele died at the scene, while Joshua was rescued from the wreckage and taken to hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.

A funeral service was later held at the London Central Mosque, where the coffins of the deceased were placed side by side as prayers were offered. Residents of Sagamu expressed gratitude for Joshua’s survival while mourning the loss of the two men.

Meanwhile, Ogun State Police confirmed that the driver, Adeniyi Kayode, has been arraigned before a Sagamu Magistrate Court on multiple traffic-related charges, including causing death by dangerous driving and driving without a valid licence. He pleaded not guilty, and the case was adjourned until January 20.

However, no official statement has been released by Anthony Joshua or his management team confirming a decision to quit boxing. The situation remains uncertain, with fans and the boxing world awaiting clarity on his future.

Joshua, one of boxing’s biggest global stars, has enjoyed a highly successful career, winning multiple world heavyweight titles and representing inspiration to millions worldwide. His possible exit from the sport would mark the end of an era in heavyweight boxing.

For now, supporters continue to send messages of support as Joshua takes time to recover physically and emotionally from the devastating incident.
