Indian billionaire Sunjay Kapur has tragically passed away from a suspected heart attack after collapsing during a Queen’s Cup polo match at the prestigious Guards Polo Club in Windsor.

Kapur, 53, a well-known figure in the English polo scene and patron of the Aureus polo team, was previously married to Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor. During a subsidiary final match between his team and the Sujan Indian Tigers, Kapur reportedly fell ill while on horseback.

Initial eyewitness accounts suggested he may have said, “I’ve swallowed something,” leading to speculation that he had accidentally ingested a bee. However, those familiar with the incident later dismissed this claim, clarifying that Kapur lost consciousness after leaning forward on his horse during a pause in the game.

A close friend told Telegraph Sport:

“He will be deeply missed not just by family and friends, but by the local community surrounding his club. He provided employment to many and made friends with people from all walks of life. He was fun, kind, and generous — a man who treated his grooms and high-profile guests alike. His gatherings were inclusive, where everyone felt equal.”

Outside of polo, Kapur was the chairman of Sona Comstar, a major auto components company. In a tribute, the company said:

“A visionary leader, Sunjay Kapur played a critical role in transforming Sona Comstar into a global mobility technology company, committed to innovation, sustainability, and purpose.”

Kapur took over the company in 2015 following the passing of his father, Surinder Kapur, who founded Sona Comstar in 1995 and was regarded as a pioneer in India’s automotive industry.

A graduate of the University of Buckingham, Kapur also held U.S. citizenship and was estimated by Forbes to have a net worth of $1.2 billion. He had two children with Karisma Kapoor before their divorce in 2016 and later married Priya Sachdev, a former model and entrepreneur, with whom he had another son.

In a poignant moment, Kapur had posted a message of condolence on X (formerly Twitter) just before his death, mourning the victims of the Air India flight tragedy in Ahmedabad.

His sudden passing has left a deep void in both the business and sports communities. Sunjay Kapur will be remembered for his leadership, warmth, and inclusive spirit.
