Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou faces an uncertain future despite securing the Europa League title, as Spurs endured a disappointing 17th-place finish in the Premier League following a final-day home defeat to Brighton. Chairman Daniel Levy offered no clarity on Postecoglou’s position in his end-of-season message.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has expressed confusion over the “weird” speculation surrounding his future, after chairman Daniel Levy failed to clarify the Australian’s position in his end-of-season address.

Postecoglou led Spurs to Europa League triumph on Wednesday, ending a 17-year trophy drought and securing Champions League qualification. However, the achievement came in stark contrast to a disastrous domestic campaign, culminating in a 4-1 home defeat to Brighton on the final day that left Spurs 17th in the Premier League—their lowest-ever finish in the competition.

Tottenham also made unwanted history by becoming the first top-flight team to lose 22 games in a 38-game season and avoid relegation. The total of 22 league defeats equalled a club record set in the 1934/35 season.

Speaking after the season’s end, Postecoglou voiced his frustration at being the only club figure addressing the uncertainty:

“I’ve been fortunate to experience moments like this before, but seeing the scenes yesterday and hearing from people about how much it’s meant—it’s just a beautiful thing. I want to enjoy that.

To be honest, I don’t even want to talk about the rest. I think it’s unnecessary.

You’re right to ask the question, but I’m not the one who can answer it. The fact that the question is being asked shows there’s doubt, but I can’t clear that up—others can. For me, it doesn’t take away from what we’ve achieved.

I believe strongly in what we’re building at this club. I want to push on and take it to the next level. Whether I get that chance, we’ll have to wait and see.”

Asked why he believes next season will be different on the domestic front, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou explained:

“I made decisions that I felt gave us the best chance of achieving our goal this year, and that’s affected our league form.

If people don’t want to take that into account, there’s nothing more I can say to explain it better.

I took over a club that had finished eighth—not second. There was no European football, and we lost the one player [Harry Kane] who practically guaranteed it. That was my starting point.

Now, two years later, we’ve delivered a trophy the club has been craving for, secured Champions League football, and finished fifth last season. That’s progress.”

“Forget what’s happened because it has been a disappointing league campaign. It’s been a bizarre season when you can finish so low but still win a European cup.

“You have to credit it him for that and winning a trophy was his brief.

“What he said in mid-season was one of the great quotes of all time. ‘I always win something in my second season’ is almost up there with ‘I’d love it if we beat them’. It’s up there with the ‘special one’.

“To say it and then deliver it, it blew my mind. But I’m getting the feeling when he speaks and I’m hearing a few things about things not going in his favour.

“They have had injuries this year but they still shouldn’t perform as they have done in the league. However, I think he does deserve another season.”
